New York State Route 31B (NY 31B) was a state highway in central New York in the United States. It served as a connector between New York State Route 31, NY 31, its parent route, in the Cayuga County, New York, Cayuga County village of Weedsport, New York, Weedsport and New York State Route 5, NY 5 in the Onondaga County, New York, Onondaga County town of Elbridge (town), New York, Elbridge. NY 31B was assigned , replacing New York State Route 293, a route assigned as part of the 1930 state highway renumbering (New York), 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. The NY 31B designation was removed in 1980 and replaced by County Route 31B (CR 31B) in Cayuga County and CR 99 in Onondaga County. Weedsport, New York
Weedsport is a village in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The name is from Elihu and Edward Weed, merchants who helped found the village. Weedsport is in the town of Brutus, west of Syracuse. It was a port on the Erie Canal. Whitford's Airport is north of the village in the town of Cato. History Weedsport was within the Central New York Military Tract. The village was originally named "Weed's Basin" because the town had a basin (boat turnaround) during the Erie Canal era. The name was then changed to Weedsport. During the Erie Canal era, Weedsport competed with the neighboring village, Port Byron, to be an entry port for the city of Auburn. The two villages competed economically until both fell under financial troubles during the closing of their respective ports (a friendly rivalry remains to this day, mostly in local sports).
